We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Financial Controller to join a forward thinking family business, on a full-time, permanent basis, situated near Honiton.

As the Financial Controller, your primary responsibility will be overseeing the financial operations of the company including ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and providing strategic financial guidance to drive business growth and profitability. The role covers a variety of responsibilities covering financial management, budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting and analysis, tax and compliance, and audit and risk management.

The Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
  • Monitor and analyse financial performance, identifying areas for improvement and implementing necessary actions. Prepare precise and timely financial statements, reports, and analyses to support decision-making.
  • Establish and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to protect company assets and ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Collaborate with departmental managers to provide financial guidance on performance, margins, costs, and overheads, comparing actual results to the plan. Assist managers in assessing the cost-effectiveness of marketing campaigns. Monitor financial performance and produce KPIs for all departments.
  • Monitor budget performance, provide variance analysis, and recommend cost optimisation strategies. Conduct financial modelling and scenario analysis to support strategic planning.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, ensuring accuracy and adherence to accounting standards.
  • Optimise the cash operating cycle by managing debtors, creditors, and stock.
  • Present financial reports and analysis to senior management and stakeholders, offering insightful recommendations. Work with department heads and senior management to develop annual budgets and forecasts.
  • Oversee tax planning and compliance, ensuring timely and accurate filing of all tax obligations.
  • Coordinate annual audits and liaise with external auditors to ensure a smooth process.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks, implementing effective internal controls and risk management procedures.
  • Stay updated on relevant tax laws and regulations, implementing strategies to minimise tax liabilities. Ensure compliance with regulations and maintain the security of confidential information.

The Candidate:

  • Proven experience as a Financial Controller or in a similar role, preferably in a family business environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Professional certifications such as CIMA/ACA/ACCA are highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial analysis, and reporting standards.
  • Solid understanding of tax laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency in financial software systems and advanced MS Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities, with a keen eye for detail and proficient organisational skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
